Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Our schools’ admission policies do not discriminate against any child on grounds of ability, physical or intellectual, and this is reflected in an ethos of tolerance and understanding. It is within this supportive atmosphere that we operate our SEND policy, following the national guidelines.

All about special educational needs

Approximately 1 in 5 children will have special educational needs at some time during their school career.

This means they may have difficulty with:

  • Reading, writing, mathematics
  • Understanding information and others, and expressing themselves
  • Organising themselves
  • Sensory perception or physical mobility
  • Managing their behaviour
  • Making friends or relating to adults

These difficulties cause barriers to the child’s learning. At both Ugborough and Ermington Primary Schools we will assess your child to identify their strengths, needs and the extra help they require. They may be at one of two stages on the SEN Code of Practice SEN thresholds:

SEN Support: Extra help in-class from a teaching assistant, small group support, ICT access and advice or support from outside specialists, e.g. speech and language therapist, health professional.

Gifted and Talented Provision

We recognise that all children have particular abilities, qualities and talents which we strive to identify and develop further. All teachers do this as a regular part of their lessons. However, there are certain children who may demonstrate exceptional abilities in one or more area of the academic, sporting, artistic or pastoral curriculum. These children may need a different type of support and we use a range of outside agencies for advice so that their needs can be met. This can take a variety of forms and may include: -

  • Additional projects set within the classroom
  • In house extension activities provided by the School using specialist support
  • Maths enrichment at Plymouth University
  • Extra-curricular opportunities at Ivybridge Community College
  • Individual Learning Programmes

Early Years Foundation Stage

In the Early Years children learn through self-initiated play and exploration as well as through guided teaching. The main phonics scheme followed is Letters and Sounds but others may be drawn upon if needed. The reading scheme is Phonics Bug but there are other schemes to support this.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1 the curriculum includes the Core Subjects, English, Mathematics and Science, as well as the Foundation Subjects – Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music and Physical Education. All statutory subjects are taught through topics so that children can make connections in their learning and apply key skills they have acquired. We also utilize the local area to enhance their learning.

The Phonics scheme we use is 'Letters & Sounds'.  As reading schemes, we use both Pearson Phonics Bug and Oxford Reading Tree.

Key Stage 2

At Key Stage 2 a Modern Foreign Language is added to the subjects taught.  Teaching through topics continues so that children build on their learning skills and understanding.  Trips and residential visits further extend children’s learning and give them first hand experiences in a range of subject areas.

Both schools are involved in Erasmus+ IT projects that enable the children to work alongside children in other European countries.
